Summer Institute

Educational Interpreter Institute
August 6 - 9, 2008
Location: University of North Florida
Jacksonville, FL

Housing: Participants will be responsible for their own lodging. Special rates for attendees have been arranged at the Wingate Inn. See their web site.

Stipends will be given to educational interpreters, working in school districts, who stay in the hotel are more than 50 miles from home and stay in the hotel. The stipend of $125.00 will be sent to the participant approximately 6 weeks after the Institute.

Each institute will have limited enrollment to promote effective instruction.

Tracks will include:

Institute #1 - Expanding Vocabulary and Improving Fingerspelling Skills
Participants will be provided opportunities to improve both expressive and receptive fingerspelling skills and sign vocabulary expansion in the areas of health, school related subject areas, business/job and other commonly used signs. Spend the institute with 2 deaf instructors in a voice-off environment.
Maximum Participants: 20
Pre-requisite - Participant is non-credentialed, with 1 - 2 years of signing/interpreting experience.

• Institute #2 - Preparation for the NIC Performance/Interview Evaluation
Participants will be involved in knowledge and skill development designed to lead them to achieving national certification on the NIC performance/interview assessment.
Maximum Participants: 20
Pre-requisite - Participant must currently hold an EIE 2 or 3 or QA 2 or 3, OR passed the NIC written exam and plans to take the NIC performance evaluation by August, 2009.

Institute #3 - Preparing for the National Interpreter Certification (NIC) Written Examination
Understand the tasks, skills and knowledge required by the new national interpreter testing system.  Learn specific content information from testing resource materials suggested by the National Council on Interpreting (NCI).
Maximum Participants: 30
Pre-requisite - Participant plans to take the NIC written evaluation before August, 2009.

Institute #4 - Introduction to Educational Interpreting
Participants will develop an understanding of the roles and responsibilities of interpreters in the educational setting while exploring the guiding principles of professional behavior; become knowledgeable about the various language systems used in the schools and the cultural issues faced by students who are deaf or hard-of-hearing.  This institute will use the textbook, So You Want To Be An Interpreter…by Humphrey and Alcorn.
Maximum Participants: 30   
Pre-requisite -
Participant has worked or will be working in the school district in the fall and has not completed a college interpreter preparation program.

Institute #5 - Oral Transliteration
Investigate the rationale, terminology, and techniques required to appropriately serve students who are deaf or hard-of-hearing and use the aural/oral method of communication. Maximum Participants: 20
Pre-requisite – 1 or more years of experience as a manual or oral interpreter/transliterator.

• Institute #6 - Mentoring
Continue developing mentoring skills with a focus on skill development feedback, and interpersonal skills. Identify appropriate tools to use in assessments of novice interpreters; gather information on resources for work as a mentor.  Maximum Participants: 20  
Pre-requisite – The participant must function as or be recognized by the District as the “lead” or mentor interpreter.

Individual Assessment

Those who are interested will be video taped while "working" on an interpretation or transliteration message. The master interpreter/mentor will review the product with you during your 50 minute session. Specific feedback on strengths and weaknesses along with suggestions for improvement will be shared.

Guidelines:

1. All events sponsored by the Project are free of charge. All interpreters/transliterators working the educational setting may attend professional development opportunities. Individuals must register directly with the Project via fax/mail or online. FAX 904-620-3985

2. Participants will receive an automatic response with information about the Summer Institute with links to the hotel, a UNF campus map and directions. A follow-up email will be sent as well. 3. Each participant is responsible for making hotel/motel reservations. Individuals are responsible for travel, meals and lodging expenses. You are encouraged to seek financial assistance from district resources.
